Scottish fabrics: tartan check shirts are inspired by Scottish kilts with a pattern of intersecting horizontal and vertical lines.
Tartan is a woollen fabric with coloured checks, typical of the Celtic peoples. Scottish kilts are therefore almost always made of a fabric with a Scottish pattern.
In Scotland, tartans have been associated with clans and families since the 19th century. Later, tartans were extended to Scottish institutions, particularly following the publication of the book Vestiarium Scoticum by the Allen brothers in 1842. Kilts are almost always decorated with tartan. Tartan is also called plaid in North America.
